01 — Battery Pass EU Backup

Independent backup hosting, built for the obligation.

Under EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542, economic operators are expected to maintain an independent backup of their passport data. Our Backup service provides this as a standalone product — operated on infrastructure designed to meet the expected requirements of the anticipated DPP Service Provider certification scheme.

Independent provider · scheme not yet adopted
Honest framing — certification status

Battery Pass EU Backup is operated as an independent backup service, designed to meet the expected requirements of the anticipated ESPR DPP Service Provider certification scheme. The certification scheme has not yet been adopted by the Commission.

02 — Two ways to use Backup

Bundled for operators. Standalone for self-hosters.

If you already use the platform, backup is included in your annual platform licence. If you run your own DPP infrastructure, push your passport data to us via REST API — your primary system stays untouched, we hold the independent copy.

Included in the platform licence

Existing operators

Your passport data already lives on our platform. Backup hosting is a contractual guarantee that a separate encrypted copy is held independently of the primary instance — at no additional charge.

  • Encrypted copy in custody on every change
  • Full-period retention
  • On-demand JSON data export
  • Proof of backup obligation compliance
  • Custody status in your dashboard

Standalone API

Self-hosting operators

Running your own DPP infrastructure? Push your passport data to us via REST API. Your primary system is unchanged — we hold the independent backup copy of what you push, with the same retention and SLA as bundled customers. A copy you keep yourself is not independent. The obligation is met by a separate provider holding it.

  • POST /api/v1/backup/passports
  • API key authentication · scoped
  • Single passport or batch push
  • Dashboard shows count + last received
  • Billed as a standalone subscription

03 — How the backup works

Copied on every change. Reconciled every night. Yours to export.

Operational reality of the backup service, from the day you activate to the day you need to restore. On retention: ESPR Article 9(2)(i) requires a passport to stay available for a period corresponding to at least the expected lifetime of the product, and the exact period for each product group is fixed by delegated act. No such act has been published, so no fixed number of years is a legal requirement today. We retain your copies for the full period the regulation requires.

How custody works →

  1. 01

Copied into custody on every change

When a passport is activated, amended, retired or gains a document, an encrypted, content-hashed copy of the passport and every linked record — supply chain actors, documents, carbon footprint declaration, state of health — is appended to an independent custody store in the EU. Nothing in that store can be altered or deleted, by us or by anyone else. Every night the custody copy is reconciled against the live record and any gap is closed automatically; every night a further encrypted copy of the databases and documents is written to immutable storage held with a second provider.

  2. 02

    Continuity if we are unavailable

If the platform cannot answer, scanning a passport's QR code serves the public passport and its published documents directly from custody, clearly marked as a backup copy as of a stated moment. Your dashboard shows what custody holds and when it last received a copy.

  3. 03

    Your own copy, on demand

Request an export from your Backup dashboard at any time. You receive an archive: every passport as JSON-LD and as its full stored record, the uploaded documents, and a manifest with a SHA-256 for each file. You are emailed as soon as it is ready — usually within the hour. The link is valid for seven days, in your dashboard and by email. No limit on exports.

  4. 04

    Restore

If you need data restored — accidental deletion, migration, an audit — contact support@batterypasseu.com. We restore from custody or from the offsite copies and tell you what was restored and from which copy.

04 — Pricing

Bundled for operators. Standalone for self-hosters.

Existing platform-fee operators get backup hosting at no additional charge. Self-hosters subscribe directly. The full breakdown lives on the pricing page.

05 — Time-anchored decision

Start building your backup record today.

The back-up duty in ESPR Article 10(4) sits in the regulation itself. It is already in force and is not deferred to a delegated act: it applies as soon as the passport obligation applies. For EV batteries, LMT batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh that date is 18 February 2027, under Article 77 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, the only fixed statutory DPP deadline. Separately, the DPP Service Provider Delegated Act, which is expected to bring a certification scheme, is indicatively expected in Q2 to Q3 2027 and has not been adopted. Operators who start now avoid a last-minute migration when it is.
